Henna Nadeem, Practising, 2010

2010 sees the launch of the South London Gallery’s new programme of artist residencies thanks to the completion of its building project, including the Outset Artist’s Flat. Located on the top floor of the SLG’s new Matsudaira Wing, designed by architects 6a, the flat provides pleasant and inspiring accommodation for a programme of three annual residencies.

The first three-month residency, commencing in October 2010, will be taken up by an artist as part of a programme of lectures and film screenings of works by contemporary African film-makers curated by Jennifer Bajorek, devised in partnership with Goldsmiths College and supported by LCACE.

The second three-month residency will be taken by an international artist invited by a panel of curators and supported by Outset Contemporary Art Fund.

The third annual residency will last six months and include the commissioning of new work to feature in a solo exhibition in the South London Gallery’s new galleries in the Matsudaira Wing. This third residency will focus on a recent graduate from a UK art school and be selected by a panel of judges in response to a process of open submission.

Current residencies include the ongoing programme on neighbouring Sceaux Gardens estate as part of Making Play: adventures in creative play through contemporary art. The project relies on collaboration with artists, curators, gallery educators, social workers, play workers, parents and carers and revolves around six artists taking up residency in a former shop unit on the estate over a three year period. Each artist-in-residence runs weekly practical workshops and runs a large-scale participatory event at the end of their residency.
