Overview

A curated visual and audio collage around the figure of the Brujx, a spiritual or folk-magic practitioner, co-organised by Alicia Reyes McNamara, Daniella Valz-Gen and Teresa Cisneros.

Join us for a listening party exploring la bruja in music accompanied by a screening of the first four episodes of the Brujos webseries by writer-director Ricardo Gamboa and co-director Reshmi Hazra Rustebakke.

Brujos blends the Latin American soap opera, American sitcom, and critical theory as it follows a coven of four queer Latino doctoral candidates as they learn magic, indulge in nightlife, navigate intimate relationships, and write seminar papers all while trying to survive a witch-hunt. These young protagonists confront histories and realities of racial and gendered inequality as they battle the secret society of white, heteronormative male descendants of the first New World colonisers behind the witch-hunt.

"As a practise of what Gloria Anzaldúa might call 'spiritual activism,' a bruja positionality is built on healing the internalised beliefs that demonise la bruja and the transgressive spirituality and sexuality that she represents." Irene Lara

Booking for the talk is essential. Book online or call 020 7703 6120.
