Overview

This iteration of South by South presents award winning feature film A Moving Image (2016), directed by Shola Amoo. Incorporating fiction, documentary and performance art, the film talks about gentrification in Brixton and follows Nina, a young, stifled artist, as she returns to Brixton after a long absence and sets out to create a film exploring her complex relationship with her community.

The director Shola Amoo will join us for a Q&A after the film followed by complimentary food by Zionly Manna, a vegan restaurant based in Peckham. 

The accompanying masterclass with Shola Amoo which runs from 4-6pm before the film screening, is open to all aspiring filmmakers. Participants of the masterclass are invited to view the film for free.

Biography

Shola Amoo is a graduate of the National Film and Television School, his graduate film Touch won Shooting People’s Film of The Month competition, chosen by Oscar nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. Touch also toured the UK as part of The BFI’s Sci-Fi season.

Shola’s debut feature is a multimedia film called A Moving Image. It had its world premiere at The LA Film Festival 2016 in competition for the World Fiction prize and received The Special Recognition Award at The Blackstar Film Festival in Philadelphia. It won a Screen Nation Award and had its European Premiere at The BFI London Film Festival 2016. It was released theatrically in the UK in April 2017 through Verve Pictures.

Shola was commissioned by The British Council to direct a reinterpretation of Othello, called Dear Mr. Shakespeare. It was written by visual artist Phoebe Boswell as part of “Shakespeare Lives” and was released on The Guardian’s website. Dear Mr. Shakespeare was selected in competition for The Sundance Film Festival 2017.

Shola is currently developing more feature projects, including a drama called The Last Tree with The BFI.
