Camberwell Arts Festival - Arts Tent

SAT 10 JUN 2017, 12.30-2PM, FREE, CAMBERWELL GREEN, SE5 7AF

Overview

Camberwell Arts Festival 2017 kicks off with an Arts Tent on Camberwell Green offering a full day of arts workshops for all ages and abilities. These include writing, storytelling, singing, arts and crafts, dance and drama.

SLG Sunday Spot artist Maru Rojas leads a free, pop-up workshop on Camberwell Green inviting children and families to create their own banners using the colour, shopfronts and signs in Peckham and Camberwell as inspiration.

Using vinyl and recycled banners you will create your own Camberwell-inspired slogans and signs and experiment with words and colours. The banners will then be displayed at the festival.

Biography

Maru Rojas is a Mexican artist, writer and facilitator based in London, and a MFA Art Writing graduate from Goldsmiths College.

Maru's writing and artistic practice examines the political decisions we make everyday in order to construct subtly subversive actions and experiences. Within these small acts of resistance Maru challenges institutionalised ideas or concepts – be it within education, the built space or public space, human relationships and our relationship to animals and objects.

In 2013 Maru was UNESCO/Aschberg Artist in Residence at the Bundanon Trust in Australia. Maru has exhibited work in the UK, the US, Denmark and Mexico and Maru's writing has been published in A-N magazine, Art in Print (US), This is Tomorrow, and other independent publications in the UK.
