The SLG's eleventh Postgraduate Residency Artist, Shamica Ruddock, is research-driven and works with sound, text, and moving image. Their practice considers the ways in which Black diasporas are engaged and explored through sound, where sound becomes a form of narrativising.
Through the residency, Ruddock will continue to develop Synthia, a sonic fiction, conceptual framework and research method that responds to maroon histories, sound culture, the theory and practice of Black Quantum Futurism and world building (the process of constructing an imaginary world), as seen in the work of America science fiction author, Octavia Butler and the myth of Drexciya, the American electronic music duo - James Stinson and Gerald Donald.
ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
The South London Gallery Postgraduate Residency is an open submission six-month live-in residency that provides an early-career artist with a rare opportunity to produce a new body of work, which is then exhibited at the SLG. The residency is open to artists who have completed a BA, and have undertaken a period of self-directed, peer-led or postgraduate study in the year prior to the residency. This can include alternative, peer organised and non-accredited programmes from an institution, collective or art school in the UK as well as an MA, MFA, PGDip, MRes.
The residency includes rent-free accommodation, a studio space, a £4,000 artists fee and £3,500 bursary to produce new work, mentoring, a commissioned essay and a solo exhibition in one of the SLG Fire Station galleries.

BIOGRAPHY
Shamica Ruddock recently completed Open School East Associates Programme and has studied at Kings College, London and the University of California, Los Angeles.
Previous presentations include Margate NOW Festival, Margate, UK, New Contemporaries South London Gallery, London, UK and Treasure Hill Artist Village, Taipei, Taiwan. Ruddock has received the Flamin Fellowship, Film London; the Eccles Centre Visiting Fellow, with The British Library; a Jerwood Creative Bursary, Jerwood Arts and the Francis Chagrin Award, Sound and Music.
