Rangoato Hlasane

Rangoato Hlasane took up residence at the South London Gallery in July 2014 as part of the EU Culture Programme’s Urban Biotypes project for two weeks. He is a Johannesburg-based artist, cultural worker and co-founder of the Keleketla! Library, which empowers inner-city youth and emerging creatives through art, culture and heritage programmes.
As part of his SLG residency, Rangoato Hlasane facilitated a creative exchange between Mysterious Creatures Dance Fusion (Keleketla! Library’s dance group in Johannesburg) and the Art Assassins, the South London Gallery’s young people forum in an attempt to unpick the global conundrum: ‘We know each other but we don’t know much about each other’.
The project culminated with a live listening party. The public was invited to witness and participate in their process of deciphering and cataloguing ‘what one can know about’ the experience of young people.
