These works were shown as part of a multimedia installation Changing Everything at the South London Gallery in 1998. Willats engaged members of the local community to accompany him on walks in the housing estates near the South London Gallery, recording observations of their environment using photography, audio and Super 8 film. The material was presented in the gallery as mosaics of text, sound and images, inviting visitors to journey through the exhibition space with the aid of a specially prepared guidebook. Willats’ practice suggests a new way for artists to work in society, opening up the function of the art gallery and encouraging productive and meaningful dialogues between galleries and their surrounding communities.
