These short films explore the lived experiences of African communities both on the continent and in the diaspora. Through stories of migration, generational memory, and the search for belonging, these films reflect on the complexities of home, identity, and the challenges of redefining community in unfamiliar lands. From Detroit to Egypt, the Caribbean, and the UK, these films shine a light on the personal and collective journeys of those grappling with displacement, cultural heritage, and the enduring hope of finding one’s place. Through powerful visual storytelling, *Diaspora Dreams* captures the essence of migration and the dreams of creating a sustainable future, even amidst loss and transformation.

DETROIT WE DEY directed by Ozi Uduma (USA)
Detroit We Dey examines the history and future of a social club founded by a community of Nigerians who immigrated to Detroit in the 70s and 80s. Through the establishment of social clubs, these immigrants are redefining ideas of home and community within their adopted homelands. But as the pandemic disrupts how members physically gather and the association grapples with the realities of an aging membership, new anxieties of traditions and history being lost to time emerge and the hopes of building a sustainable future hangs in the balance.
I PROMISE YOU PARADISE directed by Morad Mostafa (Egypt)
Following a violent incident; Eissa a 17 years old African migrant in Egypt is in a quest against time to save his loved ones whatever it takes.
ATOPIAS: The Homeless Wanderer directed by Daniella Yohannes & Julien Beramis (Ethiopia)
The Homeless Wanderer is the second part of Daniela Yohannes’ Atopias trilogy, which grapples with geographies of migration, generational memory and trauma. Yohannes plays a woman wandering the harsh, natural landscapes of the Caribbean in search of a transformational portal.

This screening is part of Film Africa 2024. Film Africa, London’s biggest celebration of African and African diaspora cinema presented by the Royal African Society, returns for its 11th edition from Friday 25 October to Sunday 3 November 2024.
