Run by Inés Cardó, a Peruvian/Spanish artist, The Knowledge of Taste is a cooking workshop that explores food as a form of community-building, cultural transmission, and archive of personal memories. The activity will reflect upon a form of knowledge that lives within the body, bringing up questions about how the sense of taste can be used to map belonging.

A cookbook created by Cardó, that maps the Latin American female presence at Elephant & Castle, will be used as a starting point for the workshop. In the book, local female food traders have been invited to share recipes that hold a special meaning for them. During the session, participants are invited to cook together a selected recipe from the cookbook, while engaging in conversations to get to know each other and share their experiences.

*This workshop is open to people from all backgrounds and ages. However, Latin American participants are encouraged to attend, and their experiences will be centred during the discussions. If you have any dietary requirements, please let us know prior to attending the workshop.

BIOGRAPHY

Inés Cardó is a Peruvian/Spanish artist based in London, where she graduated from Chelsea College of Arts. Her practice focuses primarily on migration, language, and embodied memory through video, installation, and text. She is interested in the alternative forms of memory that offer ways of escaping colonial epistemic traditions, often using autoethnography as part of her making process.
