Archive, Fire Station
Discover more about the early histories of the former Peckham Road Fire Station and the South London Gallery in this small display, drawn mainly from the gallery’s own archive.
The Peckham Road Fire Station opened in 1867, one year after the formation of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The South London Working Mens’ College was established the following year; it soon evolved into the South London Fine Art Gallery which opened in its permanent space on the Peckham Road in 1891. Although fulfilling very different functions, the aim of both organisations was to serve the local community.
